How Can I Get A Lower Boat Insurance Rate

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Many people believe that it is best to stick with one insurance company for all of your insurance needs. This can be true in certain instances but not always, which can be especially true for boat insurance.

To get the best rates you will need to do some research and maybe a few other things as well. Knowing the most about insurance and what factors are used to determine an insurance rate is the best way to get the lowest rates possible. There are predatory insurance agents in this world that thrive on ignorance to get people to accept policies that are too inclusive for their needs thereby increasing their commission. This is not an accepted practice by insurance companies but it does happen. Only through education will you be truly protected from such happenings.

First off you should think about taking a boater safety course. Insurance companies will offer discounts to those who complete these courses. This works to protect you and the insurance company. The insurance company knows that people who complete such courses become safer operators of boats thereby decreasing the risk of accident due to the operator’s error and causing loss for the insurance company. Even if they did not offer a discount a boating safety course is still a good idea especially for the new and inexperienced boater. You never know when something might occur that may require quick thinking.

Secondly you should contact your current insurance company that covers your home and car. Most times these companies will offer deep discounts when insuring other items such as boats. Call or go online and get a quote but do not accept any policy just yet. There is still much to do.

Use the quote you received from your normal insurance company as the base rate then start calling other companies. Tell them up front exactly what your needs are and get the rock bottom quote from them. Continue to do this until you have exhausted all possibilities. Then sit down and compare all of the quotes. It is not necessarily true that the lowest quote will be the best. Some companies offer extremely low rates but coupled with low coverage amounts and services. This may cost you in the long run especially if you need to file a claim and find out that the problem is not covered.

Do not be afraid to ask for a quote that covers all of your insurance needs and not just your boat. You may find that you will save lots and lots of money if you offer to bring all of your business to the company instead of just one thing.

If you are pressed for time you can always go through a multiple covering insurance agency. They will be able to get quotes from several different companies a lot faster than you can. Be sure that the agent is someone that you know you can trust. If not there is the possibility that you will not get the information that you need and only the highest quotes will be given to you in hopes of boosting a commission.

Workers Compensation Insurance - Construction Contractors

Friday, May 30th, 2008

Worker’s Compensation Insurance for construction-related framing contractors has always been expensive. Danny Harter, owner of DH Framing already knew that much because he faithfully carried this insurance in order to work in legal compliance with State insurance requirements. But what Danny wasn’t expecting - to be suddenly cancelled by his Worker’s Compensation Insurance carrier - happened in November, 2004 - all because “out of the blue,” his insurance carrier simply decided that his company was “too small” for their interest. Danny had two employees, including himself, and a weekly payroll between $1,500 and $2,000.00.

Danny was notified of his cancelled workers comp policy when the client he was busily working for one morning, came up to him and said, “You can’t work on this job - I’ve got a notice here that you don’t have valid Worker’s Comp Certificates with your insurance carrier anymore.” How embarrassing!

Danny obviously lost time on the job, and income. But he did what he needed to do, and immediately started contacting insurance carriers, trying to find someone who would not consider him “too small,” or otherwise, undesirable. After all, he was and still is a successful, hard-working small businessman. Shouldn’t someone be interested in writing his business?

To no avail, Danny could not find an insurance carrier that would underwrite his business. Fortunately, he contacted an insurance agent who just happened to know about the Worker’s Comp Co-Op. “Call these guys,” the insurance agent said. And Danny did. I picked up the phone and talked to Danny about his business, and what happened to him.

Within one week, Danny and his employee were not only back on the job with the client who had to stop his work - he also had payroll services and worker’s comp insurance coverage without those big deposits you have to put down with traditional insurance agents. So Danny saved not only saved his business. He saved additional, unnecessary hours - weeks - of downtime on the job, and those huge upfront fees.

Today, Danny is still a client of mine, and now has a third employee. His lovely
wife.

Life Insurance Agent Sales Slump - What’s Happening to the Life Insurance Industry

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

In the life insurance business, there are highs and there are lows in activity. There are several factors that traditionally contribute to this ebb and flow, but lately there have been some anomalies that are affecting the life insurance sales industry. In this article, I will examine some reasons why insurance sales would be on the rise or why they are currently in a lull.

Back a few months ago, when it was the beginning of summer, I expected a downturn in business as I always can anticipate in the summer season. Summers are slow as far as life insurance sales because people are either on vacation or they’re just too darn hot to get out and meet with a salesman. What’s more, the life insurance salesman too is on vacation. The agents usually go out and enjoy the nice weather and take the summer off to golf or maybe meet with prospects in a more relaxed atmosphere. Well, the summer is over (as far as the calendar is concerned), but the weather is still fine outside - at least in the South. At any rate, business is still running at a slow pace.

Speaking for this particular month (September 2005), it very well may be that since consumer confidence is down to an all time low since 1990, hurricane Rita and Hurricane Katrina just ripped through, and the fact that gas is at an all time high, consumers are thinking less about the future (life insurance) and more about how to keep afloat right now.

On a more global scale, perhaps life insurance sales are down because of the war in Iraq or the tension between the USA and other Countries.

Also, could it be that the “me” generation is getting its way? Are folks just not thinking about the welfare of their families as much?

One thing that has impacted the service industry in a huge way is the “do not bother me” mentality that we’ve all adopted. The do not call list, do not fax list, and no soliciting signs are crushing an industry that once thrived and depended upon these methods of communication. The life insurance agent or broker faces a real challenge where this is concerned.

So what can we do to boost sales? Can the companies help? My opinion is “yes”, the insurance companies CAN help to boost business. Just recently, Prudential has aired a consumer awareness commercial about the importance of life insurance where a boy asks his Father “Dad, do you have life insurance?”. I propose that we, as agents and general agents rally the insurance companies and get them to raise awareness and create desire to protect wealth, secure businesses well-being, and promote a better future.
